Passion and joy are emotions easier seen, felt and heard than put into words. Brian Phillips has done an excellent job of describing the intangible and elusive qualities that make Gustavo Dudamel so compelling to musicians and audiences. For some, Dudamel’s musical talents are not enough. He should not only express the beauty of his art, but also speak to the politics in his native country. In this regard, he cannot win. If he speaks against corruption or oppression he endangers the program that developed his talent and the young musicians still in it. Some would say “just shut up and play.” If he remains silent, others would say he has no morals or courage and acts only to promote himself. Dudamel has chosen to seek truth and humanity through his music, and we are richer for it.
